Motorists across Iowa’s Cedar Valley are seeing the lowest gasoline prices of the year, as the price of unleaded with a 10 percent blend of ethanol — E10 — descends below the $3-a-gallon mark, reports the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier.

Drivers who don’t burn E10 in their vehicles are getting left behind, though, thanks to changes in fuel blending standards, reports Jim Offner of the Courier. In the past, E10 was available as an 89-octane fuel, priced about a dime lower per gallon than ethanol-free, 87-octane regular-grade gasoline, the article notes; but since the beginning of October, the choices have changed -– and the price gap has widened, thanks to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandate to increase renewable fuels in the nation’s gasoline supply.
