The Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its weekly data on diesel and gasoline retail prices for the week ended December 5, 2016. Both gasoline and diesel prices rose significantly as market prices surged after OPEC concluded its November 30 meeting and announced its agreement to cut crude production to 32.5 mmbpd in January 2017.

For the current week ended December 5, diesel prices jumped by 6 cents (cts) to an average price of $2.48/gallon.

PADD 1 retail diesel prices rose 5.3cts to $2.499/gallon. In New England, prices rose 5.4cts to $2.526/gallon. Central Atlantic diesel prices rose 5.3cts to average $2.602/gallon. Lower Atlantic prices rose 5.4cts to average $2.415/gallon. Overall PADD 1 prices were 8.6cts/gallon above their prices for the same week last year.

In the Midwest PADD 2 market, retail diesel prices surged 7.5cts to average $2.431/gallon. This price was 8.3cts/gallon above its level for the same week in 2015.

In the Gulf Coast PADD 3, retail diesel prices increased 7.1cts to $2.361/gallon. This price was 12.9cts higher than in the previous year.

In the Rocky Mountains PADD 4, diesel pump prices edged up only 0.7cts to $2.457/gallon. This price was 4.7cts higher than in the prior year.

In the West Coast PADD 5 market, pump prices rose 4.3cts to $2.77/gallon. This price was 16.7 cents above its level last year. Prices excluding California increased 4.4cts to $2.679/gallon, which was 20.2cts above the retail price for the same week last year. California diesel prices rose 4.3cts to $2.843/gallon, 13.9cts higher than last year’s price.

U.S. retail gasoline prices surged 5.4cts for the week ended December 5 to $2.208/gallon. This price was 15.5cts higher than for the same week in 2015.

In the East Coast PADD 1, prices for gasoline rose 6.7cts to $2.231/gallon. This price was 15.7cts higher than last year’s price. Prices increased 4.4cts in New England to $2.236/gallon. Central Atlantic market prices rose by 5.6cts to $2.34/gallon. Prices in the Lower Atlantic market jumped 8cts to bring prices to an average of $2.147/gallon. Last week’s gasoline pump price in the Lower Atlantic market was 16.4cts higher than it was a year ago.

In the Midwest PADD 2 market, gasoline prices rose 6.8cts to average $2.107/gallon. Gasoline pump prices were 21.7cts higher than they were one year ago.

In the Gulf Coast PADD 3 market, prices increased 7.3cts to average $1.979/gallon. Prices for the week were 16.3cts higher than for the same week in 2015. PADD 3 remained the only PADD where retail gasoline prices were below $2/gallon.

In the Rocky Mountains PADD 4 region, prices declined 2.6cts to average $2.12/gallon. This price was 10.6cts higher than at the same time in 2015.

In the West Coast PADD 5 market, prices were nearly unchanged, edging down 0.1cts to an average pump price of $2.571/gallon. This was 3.4cts higher than at the same time a year ago. Excluding California, prices fell 2.1cts to an average of $2.38/gallon. California prices rose by a penny to reach an average pump price of $2.682/gallon. Los Angeles prices rose 3.4cts to 2.75/gallon. San Francisco pump prices were nearly flat, rising by 0.1cts to average $2.698/gallon, 1.2cts higher than last year’s price. Seattle prices declined by a penny to average $2.566/gallon, 11.8cts higher than prices one year ago.
