The ethanol industry faces uncertainty in 2014 as the U.S. government decides the future of a controversial rule mandating the blending of ethanol in gasoline, the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association told The Des Moines Register.

Iowa, the largest ethanol-producing state, generated more than 3.7 billion gallons in 2013, accounting for roughly 28 percent of the country’s production for the year, reports Christopher Doering for The Register. The level was similar to those of 2011 and 2012, according to the association.
