Vermont Gas has received approval from the Vermont Public Service Board for the first phase of its gas pipeline expansion into Addison County, Vermont, the state’s Public Service Board (PSB) announced.

The first phase of the gas pipeline expansion into Addison County, costing about $90 million, will extend service to Middlebury and Vergennes, reports The Burlington Free Press.

An additional $70 million project will take the pipeline west to International Paper in Ticonderoga, N.Y., including a section of a half-mile or so passing 30 feet below Lake Champlain, reports Dan D’Ambrosio of The Free Press. That project, paid for entirely by International Paper, will also get Vermont Gas 17 miles closer to the ultimate goal of extending gas service to Rutland as soon as 2020, reports The Free Press.
