Gas station owners appeared before the Mount Prospect, Ill., village board to protest a decision to double the village’s motor fuel tax next year to raise money for road maintenance, reports The Daily Herald.

The owners said the hike — increasing the tax from 2 cents to 4 cents a gallon as of Jan. 1 — would be a burden to their businesses and make them less competitive with stations in neighboring suburbs, reports Steve Zalusky of The Daily Herald.
