Steven Chu, who was the United States’ energy secretary when President Barack Obama first delayed approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, said the two countries can move past the polarized debate over the project by first agreeing that climate change is real, reports the Financial Post.

“Weather patterns have changed,” Dr. Chu told a Calgary business audience looking for guidance on how to handle the controversial pipeline. He spoke to the group on Nov. 22, reports Claudia Cattaneo of the Post. The U.S. Administration is still reviewing the project and a decision on whether it will allow it to move ahead is expected by the President next spring.
