American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Jack Gerard welcomed a letter sent yesterday (May 30) signed by over 50 members of the U.S. House of Representatives to U.S. Trade Representative Lighthizer recognizing the benefits of North American energy markets to American consumers and businesses in response to the administration’s plan to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“North American energy markets are highly integrated and interdependent, and we are pleased that members of both parties in the House recognize the many benefits these energy markets provide for the U.S. economy and consumers,” said Gerard. “Energy market integration also enhances U.S. energy security by enabling North American energy self-sufficiency and supports markets for the hundreds of billions invested every year in the production and transport of U.S. oil, natural gas and petroleum products.
“NAFTA has played a critical role facilitating North American energy self-sufficiency by facilitating cross-border trade and investment in energy, supporting millions of U.S. jobs in the oil and natural gas industry. We look forward to continuing our work with the administration and Congress on forward-looking energy policies that protect American energy consumers.”

API is the only national trade association representing all facets of the oil and natural gas industry, which supports 9.8 million U.S. jobs and 8% of the U.S. economy.
