The American Petroleum Institute (API) released the following statement from Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer Amanda Eversole applauding House and Senate passage of a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to begin repealing the EPA’s Waste Emissions Charge (WEC) established under the Inflation Reduction Act.
“This bipartisan resolution is an important step toward repealing the so-called ‘methane fee’—a duplicative, punitive tax on American energy production that stifles innovation. Thanks to industry action, methane emissions continue to decline as production increases, and we support building on this progress through smart and effective regulation. We applaud Sen. Hoeven, Rep. Pfluger and members on both sides of the aisle for their efforts to undo this misguided rule, and we look forward to working together on full repeal and pro-consumer polices that embrace American energy leadership.”
The WEC rule is redundant and penalizes early adopters of methane-cutting technologies. U.S. oil and natural gas producers are already regulated under EPA methane standards. U.S. methane emissions declined by 42 percent from 2015-2023 while production increased by 51 percent.
